Chanted Prayers and Meditations

Kadampa Meditation Center Madison offers all of the essential chanted prayers (sanskrit: puja) of the New Kadampa Tradition.

Chanted prayers are open to everyone – please join us and uplift your mind! These are offered free of charge and include all of the following (check calendar for dates):

Heart Jewel is a Guru yoga of Je Tsongkhapa combined with the condensed sadhana of his Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden, and a meditation on Lamrim.

This puja includes two practices revealed by the Wisdom Buddha Manjushri. The first is a special Guru yoga in which we visualize our Spiritual Guide as Je Tsongkhapa, who himself is a manifestation of Manjushri.

By relying upon this practice, we can purify negativity, accumulate merit, and receive blessings. In this way, we will naturally accomplish all the realizations of the stages of the path of Sutra and Tantra, and in particular we will attain a very special Dharma wisdom. (1 hour)

Please join us each month for Powa practice and a short commentary to the practice known as “transference of consciousness” for the deceased.  This is very special Buddhist practice and the method for benefiting those who have died.  We engage in this practice every month and include those who have recently died in the dedication.  Gen Gomlam will give a brief commentary to the practice each month along with the formal prayers and everyone is welcome to attend. (1 hour)

Vajrayogini is a female enlightened Deity of Highest Yoga Tantra who is the manifestation of the wisdom of all Buddhas. This extensive self-generation practice of Vajrayogini is a translation of the sadhana—ritual prayers for spiritual attainments—composed by Je Phabongkhapa. The particular lineage of this practice, the Narokhacho lineage, was passed directly from Vajrayogini to Naropa, and from him through an unbroken lineage of realized practitioners to the present day. By relying on this practice sincerely, with a good heart and a mind of faith, it is definitely possible to attain full enlightenment; but to accomplish such results we must practice this sadhana regularly. To practice the sadhana successfully we should first receive the empowerment of Vajrayogini, and then study authentic instructions on the practice such as those found in the commentary Guide to Dakini Land. (2 hours)

Tara Puja: Liberation from Sorrow

Held on the 8th of the Month

Tara is a female enlightened being, whose name means Liberator, and who is known for her swift compassionate actions. Like an enlightened mother, she protects us from the cycle of negativity and harm, and guides us in the direction of wisdom and compassion. By showing us the path to freedom that lies within our own mind, she gives us the ability to overcome obstacles, and the keys to unlock our full potential. Everyone is welcome and invited to join us for Tara’s Liberation from Sorrow puja. (1 hour)

On the 10th and 25th of each month

This is a special Guru yoga of Je Tsongkhapa in conjunction with Highest Yoga Tantra that is a preliminary practice for Vajrayana Mahamudra. The main practice is relying upon our Spiritual Guide as a Buddha and making praises and requests, but it also includes all the essential practices of the stages of the path, and training the mind, as well as both the generation stage and completion stage of Highest Yoga Tantra. By relying upon Je Tsongkhapa our compassion, wisdom and spiritual power naturally increase. This practice includes a tsog offering so please bring a vegetarian food offering with you if you wish. (2 hours)

The practice of taking and keeping the eight Mahayana Precepts is a special practice of moral discipline that is performed with a strong motivation to benefit others. In this practice, we take eight precepts and vow to keep them purely for a period of twenty-four hours. By doing this practice again and again, we acquaint ourselves with the practice of pure moral discipline and thereby make our human life meaningful. (45 minutes)

Please join us each month for Medicine Buddha prayer and a short teaching about the practice.  As Buddhists we make prayers every month specifically for those experiencing difficulties and sickness.  These prayers are very beautiful and are methods for healing ourselves and others.  This is one of the most well-known and deeply loved practices in Buddhism.  Everyone is welcome! (1 hour)

This is our main Center practice and is a more extensive version of Heart Jewel in which we make prayers and requests to Je Tsongkhapa and our Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugdän. This includes a meditation on the Stages of the Path, Lamrim. This practice is held multiple times each week. Please check our calendar for specific days and times. (1 hour)

On the 29th of every month, we make a special food offering known as a tsog offering to create a vast amount of positive energy for ourselves and others. We invite all the Buddhas and holy beings to come and enjoy a feast of great bliss and then we enjoy the food offering together. Please bring a food offering if you wish. (1 hour)
